twine (2015)

2 vlns

Commissioned by 113 Composers Collective at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities

Duo Gelland graciously agreed to perform this work for two violins in conjunction with University of Minnesota’s composition department and the 113 Composers Collective.

The word ‘twine’ in this context is used metaphorically to reflect on the delicate strands of human interaction and the way one grows in understanding of another.

An experiment in composing for two different types of mutes—wooden and plastic. Duo Gelland made these differences more apparent both timbrally and rhythmically through their amazing ability to emphasize very small expressive differences.
