*sol

Located at César Chávez park during the summer and winter solstices of 2016 and 2017, *sol blurred the cognitive lines between music and environmental sound. Participants were invited to get comfortable, watch the sun’s arc, and listen to tones seamlessly woven into the natural soundscape along with recordings of the same environment layered atop. The experience drew us closer to the beauty inherent to this profound habitat and its patterning.

Process

Inspired by the natural cycles of the seasons, political significance of the locale, and traditional observance of the solstice events, this installation is in deep appreciation of those who have come before and the fruitful year to come. During my time living in Berkeley, I found that César Chávez Park was a perfect spot to celebrate the beauty of place given the dazzling light dancing on the water and sounds of waves lapping on the shore. Meeting with others to enjoy this moment of peak significance at the winter and summer solstice made this work particularly special.
